Introduction
A mandala is a circle in Sanskrit. It is meant to symbolize the laws of the universe. In creating the mandala game, I offer my gratitude to my cousin Ofira—who taught me about mandalas—and to the Tibetan monks who brought this practice to our attention. The Hamsa hand symbol in Middle Eastern traditions is considered a protective symbol that brings good luck, health, and good fortune in all faiths. The Mandalas and Hamsas presented on these cards were drawn freehand over many months. I drew them by being “in the moment” and without judgment. Over these months, I came to appreciate the power inherent in the creation of mandalas and how they can influence affect regulation, calm the body, and cultivate mindfulness.

The inspiration for this game came from my brother-in-law Dani Blorian, who wrote a book about his volunteer work in hospice. He collected stories from people at the end of their life journeys and learned how they value their lives and what their major regrets are. As I was working on this game, the pandemic forced us to change the way we live. All of us needed to stay at home and limit social contact with loved ones and with friends. I was inspired to develop this game to reflect what we have learned about the important things in life during these challenging circumstances. The values, habits, and wishes that you will see on the cards came from the five main regrets that people cite and some of the lessons I gathered from many conversations I had over the many months of the pandemic.

The inspiration for this game came from Dr. Karen Raivich at the University of Pennsylvania, who taught a course about “Resilience Skills in Times of Uncertainty.” One definition of resilience is “the ability to sustain stress and thrive” or “the ability to have adverse life circumstances and be able to sustain oneself,” bounce back and do well. It is a complicated, multifaceted concept. In this game, I highlight some of the main aspects of resilience. The aim of the game is to help the player uncover their own abilities to thrive in the face of challenges, as well as expand and use different tools to strengthen their internal resilience.

The concepts of empathy and compassion are essential parts of life and are crucial for any leader at home or in the larger society. There are many overlapping attributes between empathy, compassion, and leadership. The aim of this game is to address questions such as: How do you determine empathy competency and hone/teach empathy and compassion skills? What are the traits of an effective leader? Playing this game raises a host of questions about these issues that can be addressed while playing either individually, in groups, or with teams.
